Open Cell vs. Closed Cell Spray Foam
Open Cell vs. Closed Cell Spray Foam

What is the difference between open cell and closed cell spray foam insulation?

Open cell spray foam insulation – Open cell spray foam is a liquid that contains a polymer, such as polyeutherane and a foaming agent. When the foam is applied to a surface, it expands and hardens and acts as an insulator.

Open cell spray foam insulation is best used to insulate those areas that you don’t have direct access to, such as underneath siding, around windows or doors, or inside hard to reach areas.

– Open cell spray foam is best for sound deadening purposes. This is because the cell structures do a better job at absorbing the sound rather than just blocking them or drowning them out like closed cell insulation. Open cell spray foam absorbs sound much like a carpet, furniture, or curtains. Also, it is often less expensive than closed cell and can be used for indoor purposes.

Closed cell spray foam insulation – Closed cell foam insulation, on the other hand, covers more area than open cell spray foams. Closed cell spray foams are better at keeping moisture out. As a result, most do not need a vapor retarder and eliminate the risk or possibility of mold growth.

– Closed cell spray foams are filled with a gas, which typically makes them stronger and are easier for construction purposes than open cell spray foam insulation. However, this added gas causes price to rise.

– While closed cell spray foam insulation is typically more expensive, this type of foam insulation last longer, provides more stability, and most importantly reduce energy bills due to their higher insulating value.

What are the benefits to spray foam insulation?

While both open and closed spray foam insulations come with their advantages and disadvantages, they both are good forms insulation. Spray foams can be used on wood, fiberglass, or metal. In addition, spray foams can be used on buildings, boats, homes, or just about anything that requires insulation.

In addition, spray foam insulation are good and cost effective forms of insulation and also have proven to significantly reduce energy costs for both heating and cooling. They also protect homes from pollen, insects, debris, and other drafts seeping through your home. In particular, closed spray foam insulation also prevents mold growth and the expansion of spores.
